We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Description
The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC) is a part of the University of British (UBC) and is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. With a mandate to support access to residential school records for Survivors, their families, and communities, the IRSHDC also works to generate inclusive dialogue that is transparent and trauma informed, and to develop Survivor-centered information practices, research, and education around residential schools and related systems. The Centre educates the UBC community and the general public about the  colonial context of residential schools and other policies imposed by the Canadian government on Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing effects of these policies on Indigenous communities and Indigenous-Settler relations.

The IRSHDC is the result of a proposal made by then UBC president Stephen Toope during the September 2013 National Event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Construction started in September 2016 and the Centre opened to the public on April 9, 2018.
