We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Description
Contains materials supporting two grant applications to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for the research and writing of Residential Schools, A Children's History and Darkness Walks. Residential Schools, A Children's History would eventually be published under the title Residential Schools: With the Words and Images of Survivors (Indigenous Education Press & Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre, 2014).

The materials submitted for Residential Schools, A Children's History supported a successful Aboriginal Traditional Arts project grant for $9,538 to write and research photographs. Included in the application materials are a description of the lack of teaching material for educators to use for teaching about residential schools, what Larry and Constance intended the book to become, biographical information about contributors including Larry, Constance, and Wayne K. Spear as well as a detailed project budget. Highlighted in the grant application is the challenge Larry and Constance encountered with potential publishers who didn’t understand the concept of the book. To secure a publisher and to strengthen the grant application, Larry and Constance paid approximately $2,500 of their own money to develop a sample copy with Canada Book Design (Beaumont, AB).

The file also contains materials related to a grant application for a proposed book called Where Darkness Walks through the Individual Artist Project Grant program. This application includes a two-and-a-half-page synopsis of the proposed novel, an artistic resume, and a writing sample. For more information on this work see the file titled "Darkness Walks: Book Proposal and Draft."

Constance wrote many grant proposals over the years and developed expertise in writing them. Over time, she was often asked to advise others.

This work has been done in collaboration with Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff at the Centre. It is rooted in our individual and collective commitment to learning and unlearning in relationship with the records and one another.
System of Arrangement
Prior to receiving the donation, the physical records in this collection were organised by Constance Brissenden and X. IRSHDC staff are working alongside Constance Brissenden to respectfully preserve the context of these records while the collection is being processed.
Rules or Conventions
While this Collection was described with reference to the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)), the primary goal of the descriptive process was guided by our relationship with Constance Brissenden and an intentional centering of Larry Loyie’s voice. The IRSHDC’s approach to archival description is one that foregrounds relationality, transparency, and accessibility, as part of our decolonizing and Indigenizing practice.
