We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Description

Contains a letter from the Ontario Library Association notifying Larry Loyie, Constance Brissenden, and Wayne K. Spear about the nomination of Residential Schools: With the Words and Images of Survivors (Indigenous Education Press & Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre, 2014) for a Golden Oak Award in the Adult Learners category. The Golden Oak Award is part of Ontario Library Association's annual reading program called The Forest of Reading®. Every year, the Ontario Library Association develops a list of books for each award category. Adult Learners voted from several titles to choose one title in the Golden Oak Award category. They chose the residential school title.

In the year before Larry Loyie, Constance Brissenden and Wayne were nominated, the Forest of Reading® Program had engaged almost 250,000 participants. There are eight categories separated by age group and reading level ranging from kindergarteners to adults. The Adult Learners category is for Canadian works ideal for English as a second language and beginner-level adult readers. Residential Schools: With the Words and Images of Survivors won the award in 2016. This award was granted after Larry Loyie's passing, and Constance Brissenden says that it was meaningful because Larry Loyie had been an adult learner. Co-author Wayne K. Spear, who lives in Toronto, ON was at the event, and accepted the award.

While this Collection was described with reference to the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)), the primary goal of the descriptive process was guided by our relationship with Constance Brissenden and an intentional centering of Larry Loyie’s voice. The IRSHDC’s approach to archival description is one that foregrounds relationality, transparency, and accessibility, as part of our decolonizing and Indigenizing practice.
