"An Act for the gradual enfranchisement of Indians, the better management of Indian affairs, and to extend the provisions of the Act; 31st Victoria, Chapter 42. Assented to 22nd June, 1869" (An Act for the Gradual Enfranchisement of Indians, 1869).

Curatorial comment
The Gradual Enfranchisement Act (1869) followed Confederation as well as the Gradual Civilization Act of 1857. This Act provided the government with more control over who they could declare an 'Indian'. It included provisions for removing status of Indian women who married non-Indian men. This portion of the Act would not be repealed until 1985.
