Description
The Indian Act built on the Gradual Civilization Act (1857) and Gradual Enfranchisement Act (1869) by consolidating them, as well as granting the Canadian government further control over First Nations identities, governance, cultural practice, and education. The Act applies to First Nations peoples, not to Inuit or Métis, and legislates who “counts” as First Nations in the eyes of Canada by determining who is and is not eligible for “Indian status”.
