We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Description
Contains materials related to creation of a draft of Larry Loyie and Constance Brissenden's proposed work "Living Traditions of the First Nations."

Loyie and Brissenden began preliminary research for a work called “Living Traditions of the First Nations” in 1993 by visiting museums, archives, and attending gatherings and powwows in communities. In January of 1995 they received a Canada Council Explorations Grant of $15,790 in response to the book proposal they sent. It was the first grant they ever received for their writing. Ultimately, Loyie and Brissenden chose not to proceed with the work:

“Although we never wrote this book, the extensive research parlayed into other books and talks. We travelled in Canada and the US. Looking back, I see that the scope of this book was “beyond us” at this point… because of the huge challenge it presented.”1

To see information about Loyie and Brissenden's activities while researching for the book as well as the application and final report for the grant they received, see the files titled "Timelines of Larry Loyie and Constance Brissenden's work and research activities" and "Canada Council Explorations Grant: Living Traditions of the First Nations," respectively.

Includes:
  • Book proposal (final as well as earlier versions, and draft material with notes)
  • Slides of book cover
  • Chapter summaries with notes
  • Book outline
