Description
This report summarizes the dialogue session arranged by the Residential School History and Dialogue Centre to discuss the Implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN Declaration) in British Columbia. The discussion was between Indigenous, government, industry, labour and civil society leaders, and examined past and current efforts that have been made to transform Crown-Indigenous relations in Canada. The Dialogue highlighted necessary considerations for implementation like the involvement of imparting an understanding of Indigenous rights as human rights, and the recognition that a legislative foundation is only one of many shifts needed. The Dialogue also explored questions about issues including the work Indigenous Nations must do to implement the UN Declaration, and the role of the public in implementation.
