Description
The Cowessess residential school was constructed in 1899 on the Marieval Reserve in what is now Saskatchewan by Roman Catholic missionaries. It was in the Qu’Appelle Valley south of Crooked Lake. The federal government began funding the school in 1901. It took over administration of the school in 1969. In 1987 the school was turned over the Cowessess First Nation. It closed in 1997. "Point is on the site of the original residential school building that was built in 1898 and torn down in 1999. At present (2018), there are five buildings on the site that were part of the original school complex" (Orlandini, 2019).
