We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement

8 May 2006
Description
First Nations and Inuit representatives entered into a legal agreement with the government of Canada, the Presbyterian Church of Canada, United Church of Canada, Anglican Church of Canada and Roman Catholic Church entities which would compensate Survivors for abuses at residential schools. The Agreement, which applied to First Nations, Inuit, Inuvialuit, and Métis students, included two forms of monetary compensation—the Common Experience Payment, which provided money based on time spent in schools—and the Independent Assessment Process, for individuals who experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. Additional funding was given to the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. The Agreement also created a commemoration fund and called for the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Click to view the Settlement Agreement, the schedules to the Settlement Agreement, and the Agreement in Principle
