We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Aboriginal Healing Foundation established

31 March 1998
Description
The government responded to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples with Gathering Strength: Canada's Aboriginal Action Plan. Included in the plan was the founding of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation (AHF) to manage the 350$ million healing fund the federal government committed to. AHF was an Indigenous led, non-profit, and national organization. Its mandate was to support community-based healing projects in First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities for Survivors who experienced physical and sexual abuse in residential school. The AHF also conducted original research into the intergenerational impacts and legacies of residential schools. It operated from 1998 to 2014.
