We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Negotiating a settlement

31 May 2005 - 20 November 2005
Description
By 2005, Survivors had launched approximately 4,500 lawsuits representing 10,000 plaintiffs, and 4,000 claims awaited the attention of the Alternate Dispute Resolution program. The government, seeking to put an end to the growing number of court cases and the flawed ADR process, sought a settlement with Survivors. On 31 May 2005, it appointed former Supreme Court Justice Frank Iacobucci to serve as its negotiator. The Catholic organizations were represented by the Corporation of Catholic Entities Party to the Indian Residential School Settlement (CCEPIRSS).
