We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Nora Bernard - Eastern Thunder

Nora Bernard holds Survivor meetings

1987
Description
Nora Bernard, a Survivor of Shubenacadie Indian Residential School in Nova Scotia, started to hold meetings and conversations at her Truro, Nova Scotia home to share experiences at residential school. Bernard’s efforts led to the creation of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School Survivors Association. In 1995, in the absence of class action legislation in Nova Scotia, Bernard’s lawyer filed a “representative action" for the Association. The suit was the first to claim compensation for every child who attended a given residential school and to claim for children’s loss of culture and language.
