We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Child, Family and Community Services Act

1980
Description
After prolonged efforts and protests by Indigenous communities, the Child, Family and Community Services Act was signed into law in 1980. Under the Act, social workers were required to notify band councils if an Indigenous child was removed from the community. The Act prioritized extended family and other Indigenous families over non-Indigenous families for the placement of Indigenous children. The 1980s saw the publication of several reports and amendments of provincial adoption laws to bring an end to what is known as the Sixties Scoop. Despite these laws, Indigenous children are still overrepresented in the child welfare system today.
