We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Canada signs formal agreements with some churches to run schools

1911
Description
Due to financial strain, inconsistencies in curricula, and poor conditions at many schools, Canada signed formal agreements with some churches regarding the running and funding of residential schools. These agreements included the requirement to admit students between the ages of 7 and 18, to follow curriculum laid out by the government, to hire only teachers approved by the Department of Indian Affairs, and to supply students with adequate clothing, food, and sanitary conditions.
