"n 1902 the Federal Government opened the flagship Sherman Institute, an influential off-reservation boarding school in Riverside, California, to transform American indian students into productive farmers, carpenters, homemakers, nurses, cooks, and seamstresses. Indian students built the school and worked there daily.
