Description
"The purpose of this paper is to identify and interpret the roles of First Nations' parents in educational change of the Peigan Reserve, who are part of the Blackfoot Nation in Alberta. An overview of First Nations' peoples traditional education is presented and reference is made to the Blackfoot context. The paper provides parents' perspectives from three generations of Peigan people, who have reflected upon the following: the traditional Blackfoot experience, with input about the federal day school experience; and the present day Band-controlled educational system. The parents have brought up some critical issues, which continue to affect their involvement in the present Band-controlled education system. It was acknowledged that Peigan parents have critical statements regarding school curricula, discipline, and educational standards. The writer makes recommendations directed towards an understanding of Peigan parents in the Band-controlled system of education"--abstract.
