We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Description
"From the spirit is a 26-pt series presenting the work and thoughts of a diverse group of Aboriginal artists from British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, Washington and Montana. For information on other documentaries in this series, please visit www.movingimages.ca.;April Mercredi is an artist living and working in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Her mother was Cree and French, her father from Canton, China. She grew up in Rocky Mountain House but was put into a residential school in Edmonton at age 16. There, any art she created was taken away. In her mid-50's she returned to work in art and graduated from Red Deer College at age 60. She sees being an artist as a lifelong process and is committed to pursuing her vision whether the work sells or not. She works intuitively, sometimes on more than one painting at once, creating works that celebrate the beauty of colour and include bright mixed media such as metal and wood."
