Description
"From the Spirit is a 26-pt series presenting the work and thoughts of a diverse group of Aboriginal artists from British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, Washington and Montana. For information on other documentaries in this series, please visit www.movingimages.ca.;Abraham Anghik Ruben was born in Paulatuk, Northwest Territories. He has become a major innovative force among Inuit sculptors, often choosing nontraditional materials to tell traditional stories in a new way. Past struggles to heal from abuse at Residential School forced him to dig deeper, something that is reflected in his work. In the long hours he spends sculping from stone, he begins with an abstract design and can shift to figurative as he works with the medium. Much of his work explores Inuit and Norse myths and legends from the 900s to 1400s. Ruben's studies of circumpolar histroy have led him to believe there was extensive contact between Viking Norse people and his early Inuit ancestors during this period, ancestors that include great grandparents who were shamans that came from the Bering Sea in Alaska."
