Document consists of an article about the closing of the Alberni Indian Student Residence.
Curatorial Comment
This article reports on the federal government's closure of the Alberni residence in 1973. Through interviews of community members, former students, and teachers, we are able to gather the predominant sentiments of that time. There is acknowledgement that the residence was, by then, an anachronism, and that aboriginal self-determination is desirable. There is also an apparent understanding that the school caused much misery, alienation, and psychological harm. Interesting to note are the reflections of former teacher, Ketha Adams (formerly "Miss Pitts").
