Curatorial Comment
This image is from a photo shoot in connection with a United Church Observer article on marine missions (published July 1957). It shows two students in front of St. Michael's Indian Residential School, which was connected with the Anglican Church. The totems hint at the importance of traditional carving, which was part of the curriculum at that School, under a master Indigenous carver.
