Description
In this interview with Jason Warick of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre's former Academic Director, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond (Aki-kwe), responds to the 2015 court case decision Fontaine v Saskatchewan (Attorney General), 205 SKQB 220, which released the Catholic Church from its obligations under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA). Topics of discussion include the "legal trickery" used by the Catholic entities to get out of the initial $25 million fundraising commitment under the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement; the specific challenges Survivors have faced in the court system, particularly in relation to the Catholic entities; and calls to action for the Catholic entities, including recommitting to the $25 million fundraising campaign and fully responding to the unmarked burial site discoveries.
