James S. Ehmann is a lawyer. He was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1981 and appointed Q.C. in 2002. Ehmann served as counsel for the Corporation of Catholic Entities Party to the Indian Residential School Settlement (CCEPIRSS) during its 2015 court case against the Government of Canada. In 2013, Canada sought clarity on the Catholic Corporation’s implementation of the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, specifically, CCEPIRSS’ deduction of its legal fees from its financial agreements. During the subsequent negotiations, CCEPIRSS came to believe they had forged a new settlement with Canada. Canada denied this and the matter went to the courts (
Fontaine v Saskatchewan (Attorney General), 205 SKQB 220). During the court case, Ehmann contributed to several case files and cross-examined Alexander Gay, counsel for the Attorney General of Canada. In 2015 the court found in favour of CCEPIRSS and the Catholic entities were absolved of all further legal and financial obligations under the 2006 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Ehmann was also counsel for the Catholic Archdiocese of Regina in 2021 when the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and The Globe and Mail made legal application for, and gained access to, the 2015 court case files.
