We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Battleford Industrial School (SK)

Dates of Operation
December 1, 1883 - May 31, 1914
Description
The Battleford school was Canada’s first industrial residential school. It opened in 1883, under Anglican administration. During the 1885 rebellion, the school closed and the building was later occupied by troops. An 1890 inspection concluded that the school had no fire protection and a sanitation system that was an invitation for an epidemic. By 1910 the farm was not productive and the school could not attract or keep qualified teachers; four years later the school was closed. (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation)

Map Information

Location
"Point is on the site of the Battleford Industrial School Building, that was in use as a school from 1883 to 1914. The ruins of the building are still present on the site. Prior to 1883 the building was the Government House of the Northwest Territories. After 1914 it was used by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, followed by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The building burnt down in 2003. The original property of the school was quite large encompassing a large portion of Battleford and agricultural lands nearby. There are several cemetery sites on the property" (Orlandini, 2019).
