We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Lac La Ronge (SK)

Dates of Operation
July 1, 1894 - June 30, 1997
Description
The Anglican Lac La Ronge boarding school opened at Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan. The school burned down in 1920 and was replaced with a new school, called All Saints. The new building was poorly constructed, cold in winter, and overcrowded. Parents were also unhappy with the way the school was run: in 1934 they petitioned for a new principal. In 1947 the school burned down for a second time. Following this fire, the school was closed and the students moved to either the Gordon’s School or Prince Albert, where a former military barracks was converted into a residential school. "Point is on the site of the main school building of the All Saints Residential School (La Ronge School). The school building was constructed in 1922 and burnt down in 1947. All that remains is part of a stone fence or foundation. The original school building (1906 to 1920) was on the same property, although closer to the lake shore" (Orlandini, 2019).
