We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Fort George Hostels (QC)

Dates of Operation
September 1, 1975 - June 30, 1978
Description
With the closing of St. Philip’s Residential School in Fort George in June of 1975, some of its former students were accommodated in the newly constructed Fort George Hostels. The hostels opened officially in January of 1976, and were jointly operated by Canada, the Fort George Band Council, and the Hostel Guardians. In 1978 the James Bay Agreement created the Cree School Board, responsible for the education of all Cree children in the James Bay region. Between 1979 and 1980 the Fort George community, including its schools, was relocated to Chisasibi as part of the James Bay hydro project. (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation)
