We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Federal Hostel at Lake Harbour (NU)

Dates of Operation
September 20, 1963 - April 30, 1965
Description
The Federal Hostel at Lake Harbour was part of the Northern Affairs Branch (NAB) Small Hostels program. The Small Hostel setting was supposed to come close to the traditional home life of Inuit children. The hostels usually held eight beds each, and local community members worked as Hostel Mothers or Hostel Parents. Children staying in the hostels attended local day schools. The Lake Harbour facility was operated out of a federal building until an official hostel could be opened. Limited classroom space in the community during the 1960s mediated against boarding in too many children at any one time. (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation)
