We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Pine Creek (MB)

Dates of Operation
August 19, 1890 - August 31, 1969
Description
The Pine Creek School opened in 1890, closed in 1892 and then reopened in a larger building in 1894. A still newer and larger building was constructed in 1899. The school and the surrounding farmland covered approximately 632 acres. As with many schools, frustration, homesickness, and conflicts over discipline led students to run away or to engage in acts of arson. In 1928 eight boys ran away from the school at once. Two years later, a boy was caught trying to set the school on fire. The school closed in 1969. (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation)

Location
"Point is on the site of the main building of the Pine Creek Residential School. The building opened in 1899 and was used until 1969. The building no longer stands. To the north of the school is the church (which still stands), and to north of the church is the cemetery. According to early plans the original boarding school building (1894-1899) was on the south side of the cemetery near the road" (Orlandini, 2019).
