We welcome you to the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre.

The records on our site emerge from the cultural and physical genocide that the Canadian government and churches conducted through the Indian Residential School System, including the ongoing impacts.

Bearing witness to these records may become overwhelming. If you are a Survivor or an Intergenerational Survivor and would like support, you can call the 24-hour National Indian Residential School Crisis Line at:

Whitefish Lake (AB)

Dates of Operation
September 1, 1908 - June 30, 1950
Description
The St. Andrew’s Mission School opened in 1903 with ten student boarders at Whitefish Lake, in what is now Alberta. A new building was built three years later and in 1908 the federal government recognized Whitefish Lake as a boarding school and began funding it. The school enrollment increased when the St. Peter’s Anglican School was closed in 1932 and when the Gift Lake Métis Settlement was created in 1938. In 1950 the residential school was closed and replaced with a church-run day school. (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation)
